Dr. Alexandru Paziuc represents a model of involvement and professionalism for the field of psychiatry. His constant contribution to the reform of the Romanian mental health system indicates a real concern for patients and for the improvement of specialized centers.
He graduated from the Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iasi and was included in a prestigious scholarship program at George Washington and Georgetown Universities in the United States.
In 1993, he took over the psychiatric activity in Campulung Moldovenesc, transforming the psychiatric department of the municipal hospital into an independent hospital. By introducing a multidisciplinary team and the concepts of psychosocial rehabilitation and community psychiatric care, he modernized the institution and created an important center for mental health care in Romania.
He promotes the idea of involving patients in their own therapeutic process through various activities and programs. He was the coordinator of the PHARE project for community psychiatric care alternatives, the national coordinator of the HELPS project, a European network for the development of the physical health of residents in care units and was part of the evaluation group of the prestigious magazine The Economist.
He is president and founding member of the Romanian Association of Social Psychiatry and member of the board of directors of the Romanian Association of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. In 1995 he founded the Orizonturi Foundation, a charitable society for the beneficiaries of psychiatric services and continues to organize national and international congresses and symposia with various topics in the field of mental health.
His activities have been recognized with various distinctions. He was nominated for the Elisabeth Pilkington Rațiu Award for Mental Health, and the Estuar Foundation awarded him, along with other personalities of Romanian psychiatry, in the event "Gala of Soul Gestures in Mental Health".
Dr. Paziuc strongly argues that psychosocial rehabilitation is a complex process that requires multidisciplinary intervention, professionalism and the cohesion of physicians with patients, their families and their community.
