Maria Grigoroiu-Șerbănescu is the head of Psychiatric Genetics Research Unit at ”Prof. Dr. Alexandru Obregia” Clinical Psychiatric Hospital, Bucharest.

She graduated from the University of Bucharest in 1973 (Psychology Faculty) and got her PhD in 1982 at the same university. She worked at the Institute of Neurology and Psychiatry of the Medical Academy (1973-1995) and at the “Prof. Dr. Alexandru Obregia” Clinical Psychiatric Hospital, Bucharest (1995-present) as a researcher and clinical psychologist performing clinical work and psychiatric genetics research.

Since 2007 she has been giving courses of Psychiatric Genetics at the ”Prof. Dr. Alexandru Obregia” Psychiatry Department of Medical University.

She specialized in Psychiatric Genetics in Germany (Humboldt fellow at Bonn University), USA (Columbia University, New York, Fulbright fellow), France (INSERM, Paris).

In 1987 she was awarded the Gheorghe Marinescu” Prize of the Romanian Academy. She is a full member of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

In 1998 she founded the Psychiatric Genetics Research Unit at the ”Prof. Dr. Alexandru Obregia” Psychiatric Hospital, Bucharest.

She is a member of the task force of the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics (2013-present) and of the task force of the Genetics Section of World Psychiatric Association (2019-present), as well as a member of the editorial board of Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Wiley and of Frontiers in Behavioral and Psychiatric Genetics.

She published 105 papers in world class journals, such as Science, Nature Genetics, Cell, Molecular Psychiatry, Lancet, Nature Communications, American Journal of Psychiatry, JAMA Psychiatry, American Journal of Human Genetics, Biological Psychiatry, etc. and book chapters with over 4000 citations in Web of Science and 6172 citations in Google Scholar.

Her research focussed on the Genetics and Psychopathology of major affective disorders and eating disorders.

She is the first author of several papers published in collaboration with outstanding researchers from Columbia University (USA), Institute of Human Genetics Bonn, and Central Institute of Mental Health Mannheim (Germany), University College London (UK), Case Western Reserve University Cleveland (USA), Zurich University and Basel University (Switzerland), Antwerp University (Belgium), Poznan University (Poland).

She is cited in over 40 psychiatry and psychiatric genetics textbooks published by famous publishing houses like Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Springer, Elsevier; Wiley, Blackwell, Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins, Routledge, Guilford Press, American Psychopathological Association, American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, etc.

She is a member of the international psychiatric genomics consortia (PGC, ConLiGen).
