Carlos – A. Mestres, MD, PhD, FETCS, was born in Barcelona (Spain) on 27 September 1956.
Currently, a Senior Consultant in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, University Hospital Zürich, Zürich (Switzerland), Dr. Mestres has expertise in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery.
He received his MD in 1979 and PhD in 1988 from the University of Barcelona.
He holds Spanish Certificates in Thoracic Surgery (1982) and Cardiovascular Surgery (1988) and The European Board of Thoracic, and Cardiovascular Surgery (FETCS – 1988).
He has a particular interest in inflammatory/infectious cardiovascular diseases, in addition to the regular practice in all areas of surgery (especially endocarditis and HIV-1 infection), cardiovascular tissues (homograft valve and arteries), coronary surgery, valve surgery and surgery of the aorta, biomaterials, and medical devices.
In addition, he has a particular interest in hospital management, databases, and quality assurance. He is active in clinical surgery.
A member of the University Hospital Zürich Endokarditis Board and the Hospital Clinic Endocarditis Working Group, the latter the pioneer in cooperative work in the field in Spain and Europe, active for over three decades, a number of studies and publications were produced over the years.
Dr. Mestres has participated in the development of Cardiovascular Tissue banking in Spain, as the tissue bank at the Hospital Clinic was the first of its kind in the country and a pioneer in Europe. Currently, Dr. Mestres has over 260 international publications in peer-reviewed international journals, 115 domestic publications in Spanish journals, and over 30 chapters in books.
Dr. Mestres is a clinical surgeon. He has participated in the teaching of cardiovascular surgery to surgical residents and has experience in academic and scientific activities.
He was a member of the Spanish National Cardiovascular Council, the regulatory body for Specialty training, for ten years (1997-2006).
He is currently a member of the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons (EBTCS).Among other positions, he has been a Foreign Teaching Fellow at the Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, National University of Singapore (1990-1991), Visiting Professor, at The Third Teaching Hospital, Beijing Medical University, Beijing, PRC (1993-1994) and Visiting Professor, Tajoura National Heart Centre, Tajoura, Tripoli, Libya (2006-2010).
He serves on the Editorial Board of several journals:

He was President of the Spanish Society of Cardiovascular Infections (SEICAV) (2013-2015).
He is currently the Director of the Teaching Programme of the CAS-Certificate of Advanced Studies in Structural Cardiac Interventions (www.structuralinterventions.ch) issued by the University of Zürich.
