IURIE ACALOVSCHI

MD, Ph.D., FRCA (Hon), FCARCSI (Hon), Dhc (University of Chișinău), Professor Emeritus University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

Professor Iurie Acalovschi started his academic career at the Cluj University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 1964, as Assistant Professor at the Third Department of Surgery, specialty of Anaesthesia - Intensive Care (AIC). In 1975 he was promoted to Lecturer, then Associate Professor in 1990 and Professor in 1991. He organized the education in AIC at the Cluj University of Medicine and Pharmacy (postgraduate courses between 1973-1994). In 1990, he founded the first department of AIC at the University and introduced the AIC curricula for medical students. In 1996, the department was accredited as European Center for Training of Anaesthesiologists by a Joint Committee of the European Academy of Anaesthesiology and EBA-UEMS Section of Anaesthesia and obtained the statute of Center for Part I (MCQ) European Diploma in Anaesthesiology examination. The department was also appointed as WFSA-ESA Educational Center for Anaesthesiologists from the Republic of Moldova (2002-2010). Professor Acalovschi was President of the Romanian Society of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care (1994-1998) and the AIC department was nominated as Center of Excellence in Research by the Romanian Ministry of Education (2001-2005). Between 2002-2017 he was Editor-in-Chief of the Romanian Journal of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, indexed in Embase, Scopus and Pub Med Central.

International organizational competences: Member of EBA-UEMS representing the Romanian Society of Anaesthesia - Intensive Care (1997-2013) and of the EBA-HVTAP Committee (2008-2013); Member of the Council of the European Society of Anaesthesiology (2004-2005); Member of the European Academy of Anaesthesiology (1985-2003) and in the Executive Committee (1996-2001). Elected Honorary Fellow of the Irish (1999) and British (2001) College of Anaesthesia and Honorary Member of the German, Bulgarian and Moldavian Societies of Anaesthesiology. Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Chișinău, Republic of Moldova(2013).

Author of 6 books, 35 chapters in 25 monographs, 201 articles in scientific journals indexed IDB, with 289 citations. Most cited original contributions: Br J Anaesthesia, 1966, Anaesth Analg 1995, 1997, 2001, Intensive Care Med 1999, Eur J Anaesth 1995, 2008. Invited speaker (28) at international congresses. Awards: Best scientific paper at congresses of Zurich (1996), Antwerpen (1997); Gold Medal “Pro Merito” of the Polish Medical Academy 1999; Medal of the University College of Dublin 2008, Diploma “Pro Anaesthesia Debreceniensis” Debrecen 2017; award of the Romanian Academy of Medical Science for the monograph “Anestezie Clinica” 3-rd Ed., 2017.
