Daniela Ionescu


Professor in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, since 2014, Daniela Ionescu received her medical degree in 1989 at the same university. Currently, Head of Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoca, Romania and Head of Clinical Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at Institute for Gastroenterology and Hepatology, in Cluj-Napoca where she currently works as anaesthetist.

She is currently Chair of Scientific Subcommittee 1 (SSC1) - General Anaesthesia of European Society of Anaesthesiology. Member of the Board of Romanian Society of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care (since 2002) and of Board of Directors of World SIVA (Society of Intravenous Anaesthesia). Member of Outcome Research Consortium, Cleveland Clinic, USA. Member of Editorial Committee of 2 Romanian journals in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care; reviewer for 8 international high impact journals. 

Director of 2 grants 2007-1013 (total funds 1,2 mil Euro). Member of steering committee of 2 European projects: MET-Repair (ESA grant) and COST Action 15204 (European Platform for Outcome Research into Perioperative Interventions during Surgery for Cancer) (2016-2020). Principal investigator in a number of multicentre international trials. Daniela Ionescu authored and co-authored over 120 publications in national/international journals (BJA, EJA, AJCCM, Cancers, Journal of Hepatology, Digestive and Liver Disease, etc). 2 textbooks on anaesthesia (Romanian language). Hirsch index (ISI Web of Science) 11.

Her main research interests include influence of anesthetic interventions on immune response and on perioperative outcome in cancer patients undergoing surgery, TIVA(-TCI), sedation for GI endoscopy. Other recent research interests: bacterial resistance in ICU, the significance of markers on survival, risk management in anaesthesia and intensive care. She coordinates 7 PhD students most of whom have research on anaesthesia and cancer.
