The XIIth National Symposium of
Prof. Dr. Karel Decaestecker is Head of Clinics at the department of Urology at Ghent University Hospital, Belgium.
He is a Fellow of the European Board of Urology. He successfully defended his Ph.D. on “metastasis-targeted therapy of oligometastatic prostate cancer relapse” at Ghent University and has been appointed as senior professor of Uro-Oncology at Ghent University since 1 October 2018.
His main interest is uro-oncology and minimal invasive surgery, in particular the robot-assisted treatment of bladder and kidney tumors and fully intracorporeal urological reconstructions.
He performed the first robot-assisted kidney transplant in Belgium in April 2016 and the first robot-assisted kidney auto-transplant in Europe in June 2017.
Karel Decaestecker is an active member of several scientific organizations, including the EAU Robotic Urology Section (ERUS) Working Group on Robot-assisted Kidney Transplantation (RAKT) and the ERUS Working Group Bladder Cancer.
He is a board member of the EAU Section of Transplantation Urology (ESTU).
He is an expert (proctor) at ORSI Academy for the RAKT course. He is a board member of Scientific Summits and appointed vice-chairman of the BVU (Belgian Association for Urology).
Prof. Dr. Karel Decaestecker is (co-) author of various scientific articles, mainly in the field of uro-oncology, kidney transplantation and minimal invasive surgery.
Prof. Dr. Decaestecker has written or collaborated in several scientific papers, mainly in the field of uro-oncology, kidney transplantation and minimal invasive surgery.He is highly involved in teaching and training medical students, residents and fellow urologists/surgeons.
