Dr. Vilca-Melendez is a Consultant Transplant Surgeon at the Birmingham Children's Hospital, in the United Kingdom, where he performs paediatric liver transplantation and paediatric intestinal and multi-visceral transplantation.
He graduated as a surgeon in Lima, Peru, and started his transplant career at the Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo. He continued his transplant training at King’s where he was awarded a PhD in Liver Transplantation by the University of London; and has worked for more than 30 years in adult and paediatric transplantation. He has now moved to the Birmingham Children's Hospital to concentrate his skill in paediatric patients only. He is well known for performing, for the first time in Europe, a paediatric combined liver and intestinal transplant from a living donor and more recently for developing a novel technique to reduce liver grafts to be able to transplant neonatal recipients (of less than 3 kg).
