Dr. Hirokuni Arai is the President of Hokushin General Hospital in Nagano Japan and Professor Emeritus of Tokyo Medical and Dental University.
From 1989 to 1991, he was a Research Fellow in Department of Surgery at St. Louis University in St. Louis, USA, under Professor D. Glenn Pennington.
From 2007 to 2022, he had been Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Tokyo Medical and Dental University and since 2022 he has been holding his current position.
His specialties include mitral valve repair especially in the field of functional MR, OPCAB and ventricular assist device.
He invented various surgical devices mostly related to OPCAB and obtained over 20 patents. He has contributed to more than 150 original articles in peer-reviewed journals and given over 200 invited lectures at regional and international conferences.
He is the Past-President of the Japanese Association for Coronary Artery Surgery (JACAS) and hosted The International Coronary Congress 2022 in Tokyo as Program Director.
He was also the Congress President of the Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery (JATS 2018), Congress President of the Japanese Association for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (J-MICS 2019), Congress President of the Japanese Society for Heart Valve Disease 2019, Program co-Chair of ISMICS 2022 and Program Director of AATS/JATS Mitral Conclave 2022 and 2024 in Japan.
