ivo de blaauw

Ivo de Blaauw studied medicine at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. He first did a residency in “Tropical Medicine” and worked for Medicine-sans-Frontiere (MSF) at Mekele General Hospital in Ethiopia. After returning to the Netherlands, he worked for 4 years in a surgical laboratory to write a thesis on protein and amino acid metabolism in cancer at the Maastricht University. He continued his surgical career in Eindhoven, Maastricht and Nijmegen, where he started to work as pediatric surgeon at the Amalia Children’s Hospital-Radboudumc. For two years he worked in the Sophia Children’s Hospital (Rotterdam) with a focus on pediatric colorectal surgery. Since 2014 he is the head of the pediatric surgical department of the Amalia Children’s Hospital-Radboudumc in Nijmegen and since 2016 he was appointed as professor in pediatric surgery. The department is a nationally recognized center of expertise for pediatric colorectal diseases, diaphragmatic hernia’s (and ECMO) and vascular malformations. These expertise centers are all part of the European Reference Networks ERNICA (https://ern-ernica.eu/), eUROGEN (http://eurogen-ern.eu/)  and VASCERN (https://vascern.eu/).

His teaching career for the last 5 years includes many teaching courses for medical students, nurses, surgical residents and surgeons. He is involved in several international teaching courses focused on anorectal malformations and Hirschsprung’s Disease.

Research now is now focused on pediatric colorectal diseases, CDH and vascular malformations. His research is on the etiology of ARM and Hirschsprung’s disease and includes genetics on ARM and pathology on Hirschsprung’s Disease. Furthermore, research is done on clinical outcome of these patients. The research is local, national and international. International he was (and is) involved in the European network for anorectal malformations (https://www.arm-net.eu/) . Finally he is involved in research on the possibilities of tissue engineering for the pelvic floor and diaphragmatic hernia’s.

He has written more than 90 peer reviewed international papers and written several book chapters. He is reviewer for more than 5 international journals.
