Professor Can Ince is a physiologist and since 2020 heads the Laboratory of Translational Intensive Care Medicine, Department of Intensive Care Medicine (head Prof Gommers) of the Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam. He is a Professor in Clinical Physiology “Cardiovascular aspects of peri-operative and intensive care medicine” . Previously he headed the Department of Translational Physiology at the Academic Medical Center (AMC) of the University of Amsterdam. The mission of his group is to accomplish bench to bedside translation of insights into pathophysiology, novel treatment modalities concepts and the development innovative diagnostic techniques relevant to critical care medicine. Together with his team he conducts both experimental and clinical research. In his Laboratory animal experimentation and technology development occurs directed at (micro)circulation and oxygenation in intensive care, surgery and anesthesiology. One of their main interests is acute kidney injury besides other topics related to sepsis, shock and resuscitation. His main contribution to medicine has been the development and clinical introduction of hand-held vital microscopes allowing the first-time visualization and monitoring of the microcirculation at the bedside during surgery, anesthesia and intensive care medicine gaining important insight into pathophysiology of shock, sepsis and response to therapy. He is chief scientific officer of a company called Active Medical BV (Leiden, The Netherlands) whose business is to provide services, products and software related to clinical microcirculation.
He is on the editorial boards of several journals and has organized several international conferences on intensive care related topics. He has a H- factor of 65, holds several patents, has authored over 600 scientific peer reviewed papers as well as edited several books.
