Univ. Prof. Dr. med. Bernd W. Böttiger Professor Böttiger studied Medicine at the Medical Faculty, University of Heidelberg. After he was trained as anesthesiologist at the Enzkreisklinikum and the University of Heidelberg, he started his research career at the Max-Planck-Institute for Neurological Research, Cologne, Germany. During the same time, Professor Böttiger was also involved in medical research at several Universities in the United States. From 2002 until 2007 Professor Böttiger worked as a Chief Senior Physician and Vice Chairman of the Department of Anaesthesiology at the University of Heidelberg. Professor Böttiger is now Professor and Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, University Hospital of Cologne. From 2009 until 2016 he was board member of the German Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI). Furthermore, he is Chairman of the German Resuscitation Council (GRC) since 2012. He is working for the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) since 2008, initially as Chairman and since 2013 as Director Science and Research. Since 2014 Professor Böttiger is member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. Since 2015 he is board member of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine (DIVI) and since 2017 he is elected as member of the advisory board of the DIVI-foundation. For the period of office 2017 - 2019 he is elected as a member of the Scientific Committee “Resuscitation, Emergency Medicine and Trauma” of the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA). Furthermore, he is reelected as a member of the “Advanced Life Support” (ALS) task force of the European (ERC) Delegate to the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) for the period of office 2017 – 2020. Professor Böttiger is specialized in emergency medicine and his research focus is resuscitation, especially bystander CPR, KIDS SAVE LIVES and cerebral reperfusion.
